Jerry Tello comes from a family where the sharing of stories has always been central to growing and learning. As he became a father and read books to his children, he found that there was a very limited number of children's books that reflected Mexican, Indigenous culture. Working in communities and sharing culturally-based stories with families, he also began receiving requests from parents for books of the stories so that they could read them to their children.

Around this time, he met a wonderful artist, Ramon Ramirez who agreed to illustrate their first book, Trenzas Bonitas and the Barrio Bears. Jerry made several attempts to get the book accepted by a major publisher, but was rejected due to the cultural and spiritual inclusions, such as the picture of the Virgen de Guadalupe above Papa Bear’s bed. It was decided not to compromise and to start an independent company named Sueños Publications LLC in 1993.

Since then, Sueños Publications LLC has continued to publish a growing number of culturally-based books for both children and adults.

Summer 2023: New children's book from Jerry Tello!

Picture
One morning, when Greyson and Tata (Greyson's grandfather) greet each other, Tata decides to tell Greyson the story of the mouse family. When the mouse family is out on a walk, little ratoncito finds himself in a tough situation. However, Papá uses his wisdom and knowledge of language to help keep little ratoncito safe. In this cute, children’s story, Tata teaches Greyson the value of learning and speaking more than one language.

Through this beautiful story, Jerry Tello reinforces the importance of acknowledging who we are and the many elements that represent us, including our culture and our language. As the world and our families become more diverse, it is important that we guide the children to accept the sacredness of themselves and that of all people. Also, as the world becomes more global, to know more than one language can increase our ability to honor, respect and be in good relationships with more people. This story is a wonderful reflection, with beautiful illustrations, to begin our discussion with the children about the importance of loving oneself, and all people and things in the world.
